About Caxixi

Description

Caxixi is an African-originated shaker that has become one of the most important shakers in Brazil, alongside the Xequerê.

Made of natural fiber weaves, filled with seed and closed at the bottom with a slice of gourd, the Caxixi often accompanies the Berimbau, as well as other percussive instruments such as the Atabaque, Pandeiro, and Agogo, being an extremely versatile instrument.

The Agogo can consist of double or even triple Caxixi shakers mounted on a single head, check the options and variations available.

The culture behind the craft

Before it is an instrument, it is a voice.

Every instrument in this workshop is born of Afro-Brazilian tradition — carried from the terreiros of Salvador and the drumming traditions of West Africa. Read how the rhythms of Bahia are played, and why an instrument made here carries more than its materials.
