About Agogo

Description

Agogo is an instrument that has a very long history, being disseminated across Africa and the African Diaspora. Used commonly in Capoeira, Samba de Roda, Candomblé (where it is called Gan sometimes), and other Brazilian Cultural Manifestations, the Agogo is a must of the Brazilian Percussive ensemble.

The Agogo made of Brazil nut shells has mellow tones and can be played comfortably with any wooden sticks.

The culture behind the craft

Before it is an instrument, it is a voice.

Every instrument in this workshop is born of Afro-Brazilian tradition — carried from the terreiros of Salvador and the drumming traditions of West Africa. Read how the rhythms of Bahia are played, and why an instrument made here carries more than its materials.
