About Lug Atabaque

Description

If you’d be wandering around Salvador or other especially cultural regions of Brazil, it would be not long until you’d see a Lug-tuned Atabaque. This is one of the most common forms of Atabaque mounting and tuning, for its ease of use.

A staple in Capoeira Groups, Candomblé, Umbanda, and Samba groups, the Lug Atabaque gradually supplanted the rope-tuned Atabaque for its simplicity and convenience.

Tuned like congas using a simple wrench, the Lug-tuned Atabaque can be readily tuned in minutes, yielding higher or lower pitches quickly.

This Atabaque, as well as the other Atabaques in the store, is made from Massaranduba and Ipê-Amarelo woods, Hard and resistant materials that are often used for building houses, supporting roofs with heavy weights boosting life-long durability.

The culture behind the craft

Before it is an instrument, it is a voice.

Every instrument in this workshop is born of Afro-Brazilian tradition — carried from the terreiros of Salvador and the drumming traditions of West Africa. Read how the rhythms of Bahia are played, and why an instrument made here carries more than its materials.
