About Sabar

Description

The Sabar drum is a West-African Drum, especially important in Senegalese Culture and Tradition. Using a different form of tuning than traditional Djembe and the Brazilian Atabaque, the Sabar Drum has a unique rope and cloth combination used for putting pressure on the drumhead.

With an 11-12 inch drum head, the heigh of the sabar is optimal for playing while seated, or mounted on a higher pedestal.

The drum is made out of solid wood carved in this traditional West-African format, in homage to Senegal and it’s influence in Brazilian Culture

The culture behind the craft

Before it is an instrument, it is a voice.

Every instrument in this workshop is born of Afro-Brazilian tradition — carried from the terreiros of Salvador and the drumming traditions of West Africa. Read how the rhythms of Bahia are played, and why an instrument made here carries more than its materials.
